The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) report on screening mammography

The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) published NEW guidelines for screening mammography at the end of 2009. Their recommendations are highly controversial, and need to be challenged.

In particular, their advice that women under the age of 50 should NOT be routinely screened, despite the large amount of data supporting screening benefits in this age group, and the idea that the harms of screening outweigh the benefits in this age group need to be challenged.

The Society of Breast Imaging and the American College of Radiology have provided responses to these new guidelines, but there is still residual controversy, and physicians and radiologists are confused.

I sat down with Drs. Ed Sickles of UCSF, and Dan Kopans of Massachusetts General Hospital to answer some of these questions
